How long does grading actually take?
Teachers talk about grading in stacks and weekends, rarely in minutes per paper. But minutes per paper times papers per week is the whole story of where evenings go, and doing that arithmetic honestly is the first step to changing it.

These are ranges for real grading: reading the work, scoring against criteria, and writing feedback the student can use. Skimming for completion is faster and is also not grading.
The multiplication nobody says out loud
One essay assignment across five sections of 28 students at 12 minutes each is 28 hours of grading. Assign an essay a month in a writing-heavy course and the grading alone is a part-time job stacked on the full-time one. None of that time appears in a contract or a schedule; it appears on Sunday.
Where the minutes actually go
- Writing feedback: roughly half to two thirds of per-paper time. Reading a two-page essay takes three or four minutes. The other eight are typing what you noticed. This is why feedback habits, comment banks, and drafted comments move the total more than reading faster ever will.
- Re-deciding standards: the invisible tax. Without a rubric, every paper re-litigates what an A looks like. With observable descriptors the decision is made once. See how to make a rubric.
- The last third of the stack. Fatigue slows grading and, worse, drifts it. Papers graded 25th deserve the grader that papers graded 5th got, which argues for shorter sessions and per-paper timers.
What actually shortens it
In order of impact: draft the feedback instead of typing it, grade with observable criteria, comment on patterns rather than instances, and give whole-class feedback for whole-class problems.
