Biography Report Rubric (Grades 4-8)
The difference between a biography report and an encyclopedia entry is the significance criterion: not just what the person did, but why it mattered and what changed because of them. This rubric weights that thinking, so the report cannot be completed by rearranging a website's facts.

How to use it
- Require the significance paragraph in the outline stage; if it cannot be drafted early, the student has a list of facts and not yet a subject.
- Ban the birth-to-death opening sentence and offer three alternatives; the first sentence predicts the whole report's energy.
- Ask for one fact that surprised the student, which quietly enforces reading past the first source.
What students most often get wrong
- Reports that are a timeline in paragraph form, every sentence starting with a year.
- Claiming the person changed the world without one sentence of how.
- Using one website and citing three.
