Math Problem Solving Rubric (Grades 3-8)
For constructed-response problems where the answer is worth less than the path to it: word problems, performance tasks, journal problems. Twenty points, four criteria, and the computation is only one of them, because a right answer with no visible reasoning and a sound method with one arithmetic slip should not score the same.

How to use it
- Share the rubric language with students as the four questions: what is asked, what is my plan, is it right, can I explain it. The rubric doubles as a problem-solving checklist.
- Score a class set one criterion at a time; strategy in particular calibrates better when you see thirty approaches side by side.
- Use the same rubric all year on different problems so growth is visible in the profile, not just the total.
What students most often get wrong
- Writing only the answer, which caps three of the four criteria at the bottom band regardless of correctness.
- Explaining what was done step by step but never why it works, which is the difference between the top two bands of criterion four.
- Ignoring the reasonableness check: an answer of 480 miles per hour for a bicycle stands unquestioned.
