Group Project Rubric (Grades 6-12)
The failure mode of group grading is one grade stretched over four levels of effort. This rubric splits the score: 45 points follow the individual through contribution logs and reflection, 55 follow the shared product. Students see from day one that hiding in a group, or carrying one, both show up in the number.

How to use it
- Require a one-page contribution log per student, updated at each milestone, and collect it before grades are discussed; the log is what makes criterion one scorable.
- Announce the 45/55 split when the project starts. The knowledge that individual work is scored individually changes behavior in week one, not week four.
- Check in at the midpoint against criterion two; collaboration problems found at the deadline can only be graded, but found midway they can be fixed.
What students most often get wrong
- Dividing the work by paragraph instead of by role, which produces four mini-projects stapled together and a visible seam at every join.
- One member quietly redoing everyone's sections the night before, which costs the group in criterion two and the redoer in honest reflection.
- Reflections that praise the whole group in general terms to avoid naming who did what.
